Quite simply we believe that the role of a soccer coach should be centered on teaching the fundamentals of the game of soccer. As such, our objective each season will rest on the improvements shown in both the player and the team over the results obtained on the field. The game of soccer is meant to be played with the ball on the ground, with fluid passing and movement. If we can instill these values, along with both sound technical abilities, as well as the players desire to learn, the results will follow.
To be a coach of any sport is a great honor, and a title that should be worn with pride. One should coach, not for one’s own self-gratification, but for the joy and the self-belief that their players portray at being a member of a team, saving a penalty in the last minute or even the life lessons that will continue far beyond the fields of play. The motivation to coach comes from this desire to make a meaningful impact in the life of another, and is a responsibility that should not, and will not be taken lightly.
Anyone who has played one sport or another as a youth can undoubtedly recall one of their youth coaches. Some of these memories will be favorable, whilst other will be unfavorable. As a coach one needs to understand we are the basis from which our player’s perception of the game of soccer will be based upon. If we give off the impression of win at all cost, we remove the aspect of fun. If we remove the concept of competition then we are eliminating the ability to improve. We will make mistakes, but they will be honest mistakes, and will be learnt from.
Learning to play soccer should be a fun experience. After all, it is supposed to be a game! As such, practices should focus on enjoyable activities and games that will develop a strong fundamental base over time. We all need to understand that winning and losing comes in many shapes and forms. We may lose the game, but ultimately end up winning!
